In partnership with Healthcare Federation of Nigeria (HFN) and Anadach group
Theme: Growing small to medium health businesses in West Africa - with a special focus on Nigeria
The healthcare system in Nigeria and elsewhere in the region is challenged by numerous constraints ranging from inadequate infrastructure to shortage of qualified healthcare personnel and poor funding amongst other issues. The country’s low spending on healthcare in comparison to other nations creates an unmet demand for health services which is further compounded by a fast-growing population and high disease burden[1]. As a result, greater emphasis is placed on the growing private healthcare market which makes it an important focal point for prospective investors to examine1.
Healthcare provision has always been significantly provided by the private sector-up to 70%[2]. Stakeholders in the health sector have identified small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as a significant tool in driving sustainable healthcare. SMEs deliver 60% of services in the health sector[3]. The market is large and fragmented and solo ownership is typical of most providers e.g. private practitioners, nursing homes, pharmacies, laboratories.. However, in order to successfully run a healthcare business, practitioners require some level of business and management skills which many do not possess. As such, many health SMEs continue to struggle with numerous challenges in growing their businesses- from accounting systems and data management to raising capital for purchasing modern equipment, etc.
In light of these challenges, the Health Federation of Nigeria (HFN) and Anadach Group and through this Healthcare Workshop plans to contribute to the growth of healthcare SMEs by improving the capacity of a wide group of healthcare providers with the aim of improving private sector healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
